HERS adds Air Conditioning System Perfomrance Testing to the standard HERS Rating. It is the defintive rating of residential energy efficiency.
Air conditioning in hot, humid climates is the largest consumer of electricity in your home. The standard HERS Rating assumes that all A/C systems are performing at the same percentage of their potential (rated) output. This is decidedly not the case, as performance may vary between 40% and 90% of rated capacity – with the national average at 57%. Where your system falls within this range makes a HUGE difference in how much you spend each month for electricity and how long your A/C system lasts.
The HERS Rating measures your system’s actual performance, compared to its rated performance. Air flow and temperature measurements diagnose exactly where in your system efficiency is being lost – and this is often not in the equipment itself, but in your air distribution (duct) system.
The HERS Rating process includes the complete HERS process, with the addition of diagnostic testing and reporting to you on the key air conditioning system parameters. Without this diagnostic testing, it is not possible to measure how well your system is performing - or where to do remedial work to bring its efficiency up.
The HERS Plus Rating process includes the complete HERS process, with the addition of diagnostic testing and reporting to you on the key air conditioning system parameters.
This is the gold standard for air conditioning system efficiency. And since A/C efficiency is one of the prime determinates of overall home energy efficiency in hot, humid climates, the HERS Rating provides the data needed to increase your home’s actual (as opposed to theoretical) efficiency.
When this testing protocol is performed during the Initial Rating, it shows the efficiency of your duct system – and whether it is adequate or needing repair or replacement. When performed during the Final Rating, this testing determines the quality of a new installation.
In addition to the benefits provided by the Home Energy Rating (HERS Rating),
HERS Rating ...
Reveals A/C system performance and pin-points where improvements can be effectively made.
Tests the adequacy of your air distribution system to see if your current duct system is efficient.
Tests the performance of a new system to ensure you get the quality you paid for.
"We knew something was wrong with our A/C because some of the rooms wouldn't get cold even if the A/C ran continuously. The guys from Energy Efficiency NOW diagnosed what was wrong with our system (previous A/C people didn't have a clue). Then they recommended a really quality A/C contractor, who came, confirmed Jon's diagnosis, and fixed the problem. All our rooms are comfortable and our electric bill is down."
